AUSTIN POETRY SOCIETY
Robert Elzy Cogswell -

Friends of Austin Poetry,

The deadline for listing members and annual contests in our annual
Yearbook is chortling over our mortal incompetence, with time possibly
an illusion and all the systems we invent such a hullabaloo in a teacup.

All the same, I want to remind you that the deadline is here, the
15th of August. Since that's Sunday, I'll get your name and contest
sponsorship into the Yearbook if you get it in the mail on Monday. The
forms you need are attached.

With a membership, you get a copy of the Yearbook, which includes all
our contest details, meeting listings, a list of resources on poetry,
and a guide to poetic forms and terminology. You'll also get paper
copies of our monthly Museletters, September through May, listing
Austin poetry events.

Whether you join or not, you're welcome to all our meetings, free of
charge. Whether you join or not, you will receive e-mail copies of the
Museletter, also free of charge. Only members qualify to enter our
contests. This year, we plan to invite contest winners (both monthly
and annual winners) to let us include their poems in a chapbook, The
Best of Austin Poetry, 2010-2011, to be published after our annual
awards ceremony in May.

More important than what you get for a membership is what you give
when you join. You're supporting Austin poets and poetry, including
all Austin poetry organizations and activities. We won't be satisfied
until everyone in Austin writes and reads poetry. It's a big job, but
someone's got to do it.

So print out the application form attached and send us a check.

Let us know by a reply if you want off this list.

CONTEST SPONSORSHIP is another option you have

You don't have to be a member to sponsor an annual contest. Last year
we managed annual contests and awarded some $1300 in prizes. This year
we've got even more to award in the spring. A contest sponsorship form
is attached.

You may sponsor a contest. Name it for your Aunt Gertrude or someone
else you want to honor, your favorite teacher, your favorite poet,
your favorite form of poetry, your favorite flower (aren't the crepe
myrtles astonishing this year?), your cat, your dog, or almost
anything else. You may specify a particular form of poetry for your
contest, and you may specify a particular subject for poems. What
better way to support poetry than to inspire the writing of fresh poems?

DON'T FORGET THE AUGUST 26 FOURTH THURSDAY OPEN MIC.

Ralph Hausser is back to host it, and this month we'll have a
completely open microphone (with no featured readers). As always, the
Fourth Thursday Open Mic runs from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., with an open mic
for everyone after featured readers; bring your poetry and sign up to
read. NeWorlDeli, 4101 Guadalupe.

OTHER UPCOMING EVENTS (other recurring events are listed under Resources on
our web page, www.austinpoetrysociety.org ):

August 19, Thursday, 7:00 p.m. Thirsty Thursday features Deb Akers, a star of
Austin poetry venues. 120 Frog Pond Rd. in Dripping Springs. Hosted by Nancy
Fierstien. 858-2024. Admission: cans of food for poets pantry. The proposed
theme for the open mic segment of the program: "Pets." Come to read and
celebrate Nancy Fierstien's birthday.

August 22, Sunday, 4:00 p.m. Borderlands Community of Poets features the Poets
of Slough Press: Ken Jones (presenter), Chuck Taylor, Lowell Mick White and
Hedwig Gorski. Hosted by Deb Akers. Free. Barnes & Noble Sunset Valley, 5601
Brodie Lane. borderlandspoetry@sbcglobal.net

August 28, Saturday, 11:00 a.m. APS Critique Group, with stand-in host Margie
Roe, in the upstairs dining area of the Central Market (up the stairs beside
the coffee bar). Bring eight copies of one of your poems, and friendly poets
will give feedback. Margie offers this nudge if you want to write a poem for
the occasion: write a poem in the subjunctive mood, along the
following pattern: If such-and-such were true (something basically
impossible) then such-and-such would or could happen. The most famous
example may be "To His Coy Mistress" by Andrew Marvell (available by
Google). Or think of the song, "Oh if I had the wings of an angel,
over these prison walls I would fly...."
